Eating well is a form of self-respect.
Hello and Welcome to Paleo Peach!
I’m Alice. Just a girl passionate about eating well with a perpetual love of cooking and creativity in the kitchen.
My health and wellness journey hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing. Throughout my teenage years pressure from mainstream media, and my own perception of how women should look, I restricted calories in my diet by skipping meals in order to quickly lose weight and found myself obsessing over food. Fast forward a couple of years into university with excessive drinking and junk food binges resulting in a 15-pound weight gain and I found myself turning to crash diets, detox teas and miserable amounts of cardio in an attempt to lose weight. I didn’t consider the damage it could be doing to my body and adopting a lifestyle of eating well and exercising regularly in order to improve my health and fitness wasn’t even a thought that crossed my mind.
I got to a point where I realised something had to change. I signed up for The Edinburgh Marathon in 2014 and gave myself a goal to work towards, I hired a personal trainer, started weightlifting and overhauled my diet to start fuelling my body correctly for training. It was the first time in my life I actually enjoyed working out; I was smashing targets and watching my muscles grow. I no longer cared about being skinny and learned that if I started focusing on my athletic performance and strength in the gym that aesthetics would be a byproduct of this effort. It certainly opened my eyes to the fact that exercise goes a long way past looks and actually how it makes you feel is far more beneficial.
With regards to nutrition, I learned about the Paleo diet about two years ago. I found it to be most suitable to my dietary requirements, as I appeared to be developing a sensitivity to dairy as well as struggling to digest certain grains. Since then I’ve experimented with ideas and recipes to challenge myself to keep healthy food fun and interesting (you won’t find any boring chicken and broccoli here). By educating myself on the balance of fats, proteins and carbs I eat intuitively to prevent cravings, feel fuller for longer and fuel my workouts and recovery efficiently. As a result, my relationship with food has definitely changed and I aim to eat healthy, nutritious food 80-90% of the time, allowing myself treats as and when I want them.
I’m a firm believer that health and wellness starts from the inside out; physically, mentally and emotionally. I strive to find a balance with these components and have realised that nutrition is one of the simplest ways to start tapping into this wellbeing. I’ve spent the last couple of years experimenting with wholesome recipes to find food combinations that provide the necessary fuel and nutrition my body deserves. With this website, I hope to offer you the tools to be able to cook simple, easy and nourishing recipes and join me in this lifestyle.
